Lowriders – Big Moustache
Three minutes or so of thoughtless, hedonistic rock & roll abandon
The Lowriders are as retro as the cars that their name references. As if blasted in via a time warp from the dirty end of the 70s the Lowrirders are obviously enthralled by the classic rock of that period.
On’ Big Moustache’ this Colchester quartet comes over as a less bluesy Black Keys, or a Led Zep devoid of Page’s guitar histrionics. The song exudes a sleazy garage rock character, calling to mind smoke filled dives where your Doc Martens are constantly glued to a beer soaked floor.
A sludgy riff arrives and lasts the duration of the song, as distorted, shouted vocals snarl around the messy milieu, evoking a rebel-without-a-cause anger.
Alas, the song aims for three minutes or so of thoughtless, hedonistic rock & roll abandon, yet in reality it sounds like the kind of noise a dad, who can’t quite grow old gracefully, would make if left alone with some pedals and guitars.
Harsh, maybe, yet this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as anyone who has caught Guided By Voices recently would surely testify. So while certainly not reinventing the wheel, The Lowriders at least rekindle the past with some attitude.
